Overseas job or visa: warning signs and what to do
What to do
Ask for the agency's RL licence number and check that its status is Active on the government list. Pay only the agency, never a middleman, and get a written contract. Verify the visa itself before paying the balance.
Warning signs
- Offers an overseas job or visa.
- Mentions a "free" or "azad" visa, which is not a real work-visa category.
- Asks you to hand over your passport.
- Promises an unusually high salary.
- Offers office, data-entry or customer-service work in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar or Thailand, the pattern used to traffic jobseekers into scam compounds.
- Offers work abroad on a tourist or visit visa. That is not legal employment, and it is how people end up stranded or trafficked.
How this scam has played out
Fake jobs leading to scam compounds in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar
Jobseekers from Bangladesh, Africa and elsewhere have been offered "data entry", "computer operator" or "customer service" jobs in Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar, sent on tourist visas, had their passports taken and been forced to run online scams. In May 2026 a BMET director said manpower clearance for Cambodia had been stopped.
